Amelia - Just checked and it is only 1hr 33 mins from Waterloo to Portsmouth on the train so count me in and I will square it away with my wife on the basis I will be having my own birthday celebration. Cheers Frazzle

Hmm - let me see what I can arrange - not sure how long it takes by train from London to Portsmouth - I will check it out. Ironically that is my birthday and my wife won't celebrate it so there would be certain justice in celebrating with a bunch of apostates.

Aust. Election in 1 week - A review of Kevin Rudd, PM
by fulltimestudent ini'm still determined not to vote - just to write something unpleasant about pollies on the ballot paper.
if i lived in victoria, i just may, as an act of sheer bastardry, vote for julian assange (of wikileaks fame), but i don't live in vic, so i cant.. my objection to voting is that the political choice offers two self-perpetuating oligarchies (who are something like the governing body).
they make up a slate of candidates and election advertising consists of attempting to persuade swinging voters to vote for their slate of candidates.. anyway, i noted that k.rudd has made a video in chinese, aimed apparently at mainland china.

One of my Aussie colleagues here in London described it best when he said voting in this Aussie election is like choosing between Hitler and Stalin. A bit over the top but you get the idea.

*Facepalm* What do you make of this cultish email I just got from my JW friend? What do I say to her?
by Julia Orwell ina bit of background: she is a sweet sister who has hard a really hard life: mum killed in an accident when she was young while once-an-elder dad was off having an affair after having been released from jail after serving time as a pedophile; she spent months in hospital after the accident which killed her mother; brothers jailed as pedos, ex husband left her cold with their 6 month old son- she's had a tough life and is a really sweet lady.
she's intelligent, caring, forgiving and articulate.
far too good for jws.. she 'brought me into the truth' as they say, and as such we've always had a pretty good bond.. now, after the gossip/slander fiasco of another so-called friend running around telling everyone i'm an apostate and not to talk to me, i unfriended my jw friends from facebook with an explanation.

Hey Julia - that email was Rationalisation Central - she knows the problems but will use her reason to twist everything around so that she can still be part of Jehavah's organisation and nothing will deter her from that. She is now in 'Love bomb Julia and Jason back into the organisation by convincing them it really is the Truth despite the problems' mode. Once she realises this is a forlorn hope she will be forced by policy to disown you even though she really really won't want to do this but her loyalty to the organisation will win out. So be prepared. I feel so sorry for you because it will be very sad when it happens. So I suggest you don't do anything to prolong the agony for her and you by giving her hope she has a chance of luring you back in. Good luck. I really feel for you and your hubby going through this - you are in for a bumpy ride but you have the great advantage of doing it together and you will come out the other end better for it. Take care and best wishes

Thanks Phizzy for the meetup link _ I will get on to that from Facebook when I get the chance - ditto big mac for the Facebook page invite.
Amelia - Thanks for the invite and I would love to come to the Xmas party in Portsmouth but can just see how well that would go down with the missus. 'Um would you mind if I spend a night away in Portsmouth celebrating Xmas with a bunch of apostates?' or alternatively 'I am going to Portsmouth and will be home in the morning but I can't tell you who I am going to meet there but I am not having an affair.' Anyway let me know when it is on and I will see if I can wangle it.

I think what you posted originally sounded very sensilbe and am glad the UK seems to have learnt the lesson of Afghanistan and Iraq as parliament voted against military action against Syria. Chemical Weapons are a poor countries WMD and as such are relatively ineffective and as the scientist explained can be countered in various ways. While the use of CW is deporable and horrible, particularly against women and children, it pales into insignificance as compared with Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
My wife tries to use Syria as proof that the end is near but I have pointed out to her that this smacks of desperation as anyone who is remotely familiar with world history knows that it is a very minor conflict when compared with other wars through the course of history. But perspective is not big in the JW worldview.
I think if I had been in your position I would have made some withering comments about the idiocy of your father's commentary - maybe asking him about science's contribution to his ability to make a facebook comment and in every other aspect of his life and how if the WBTS ruled the world, in which science was discouraged, we (well luckily not us as we would have been eaten by birds) or whover was left would be living in the dark ages and rather than living forever would be dying of basic diseases. In comparsion your response was very restrained.
Cheers

Now I'm not a JW, is it ok for me to...
by Julia Orwell in...drink a lot?
gosh i love wine.
i like a good bottle of wine each night, and i have a high tolerance to alcohol, though i never drank much (except for a couple of times with the vodka, but i don't keep that stuff in the house anymore, way too dangerous) as a jw because getting slightly happy is a 'sin'.

Julia
I too like wine, Aussie red in particular, a lot, and have had periods when if I wasn't depressed, I was close to, and was self-medicating with alcohol. I have a good tolerance like you and could manage a bottle of wine or the equivalent or more on a reasonably frequent basis. I realised this was not good for my physical or mental health (alcohol is a central nervous depressent so reinforces depression symptoms) so I now try to restrict my wine intake to 2 glasses a day and have at least two days off a week but occasionally have a bit more or even a lot more than that but I try not to do that more than once a month. This regime seems to be working for me but you need to work out what works best for you.
It was brave of you to ask the question but the fact that you asked it may mean you have already identified this as an issue and hopefully your next step will be to address the issue.
Good luck
